JOB DESCRIPTION

This is highly skilled work installing and maintaining electronic traffic control devices, traffic counting devices, and other traffic-related equipment.

Training and Experience

Minimum Experience: High School education or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma plus three (3) years working with electronic and electrical work, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Experience in commercial wiring, power distribution (power lines) or automotive electrical work. Computer experience is required.

Professional Licenses/mandatory requirements

Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License is required.

Within one (1) year from the date of hire, completion of I.M.S.A. Traffic Signal Technician Level I Traffic Signal Technician Certification and State of Florida Temporary Traffic Control Intermediate Certificate is required.


SALARY: $ 20.00 per hour plus benefits

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of operations and repairs of traffic signals
  • Knowledge of traffic work zone safety
  • Knowledge of high voltage and low voltage circuitry hazards and safety procedures
  • Ability to read blueprints and trace electrical circuits
  • Ability to operate and work under stress and pressure
  • Skill with high voltage, with power on or off in safety
  • Skill in correcting electrical problems without supervision
  • Skill in correcting or modifying problems or equipment on the job site
  • Skill in correcting the problem in the shortest and safest manner

Essential Functions

Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair signal system equipment; includes traffic signal controllers, malfunction management units, GPS or radio-based pre-emption systems, inductive loops, various video detection systems, fiber optic interface devices, Ethernet switches, cellular routers, traffic monitoring cameras, school zone programmable clocks, and advanced flashing beacons

Assist in responding to all traffic signal complaints and trouble calls received, assess the situation, troubleshoot, and take appropriate corrective action under supervision

Assist in constructing, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground utilities associated with signal equipment using bucket trucks, aerial platform trucks, and trenching equipment

Assist in maintaining and updating multiple databases and traffic signal systems, as well as engineering and electrical blueprints, legal and inventory documents

Assist in performing preventative maintenance on traffic signals, check operation, replace LED indicators, clean cabinets, and document equipment condition

Assist in the installation and maintenance of signs throughout the County using various types of post hole diggers, augers, and drivers

Must be able to place barricades and other types of safety equipment

Paint crosswalks, turn-arrows, and striping on County roads

Clean and maintain shop grounds

Assist in the maintenance and repair of shop equipment; keep materials, supplies, and equipment in good order

Required to work during a local declared state of emergency

Work Environment

Works inside and outside in various types of weather. Hazardous conditions such as working on active roadways, at heights up to fifty (50) feet, around power lines, darkness, noise, electricity, hazardous surfaces, slippery and uneven surfaces.

Essential Physical Skills/Demands

Will use both hands simultaneously while standing or sitting; requires constant pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, kneeling, stooping, climbing, walking, and driving. Frequent lifting and carrying of ten (10) to fifty (50) pounds. Position requires oral and written communications, normal color vision, and adequate eyesight and hearing to safely perform the essential functions.
